JARVIS GARDENS, Chico, CA

Designed and constructed under the requirements of the HUD 202 program, Jarvis Gardens provides 50 units of affordable senior independent apartments, including spacious outdoor living designed and constructed around seasonal native wetlands.

Although working with a tight budget, Larry, working as Director of Housing and Project Architect/Manager for Michael Willis Architects, designed a highly livable and popular building so efficiently, that more than $100,000 of upgrades such as improved security systems and upgraded finishes were added. The project was also completed ahead of schedule.

Designed in a “contemporary craftsman” style with allusions to the striking agricultural buildings that dot the area, the building has a combination of periodic bays, as well as changes in materials and colors to break up the long street façade. Large louvers not only add to this effect, but provide higher than required levels of attic ventilation, reducing cooling load.

Program: 50 units (40,000 sq. ft.) of affordable, senior rental housing, with community room, offices, service spaces, and landscaped grounds on a 3.02 acre site.
Construction Type: Two story Type V One-Hour Rated construction.
Funding: HUD 202 and local funding.
Client: Christian Church Homes and Northern Valley Catholic Social Service.
Completed: 2007
